At Old First we have encouraged younger parishioners, as well as those young at heart, to submit drawings about the sermons, as well as what Old First means to them. Below are some of the drawings that parishioners have submitted:

For you always have the poor with you, …

Matthew 26:11

If there is among you anyone in need, a member of your community in any of your towns within the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbor.
… Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, “Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land.”

Quickly, bring out a robe–the best one–and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!

Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot would say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear would say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.  If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be?

Draw a star. Maybe you’d like to draw the three magi and their camel following the star to meet Jesus. Maybe you’d like to draw lots of stars in outer space or the sky. Maybe you’d like to draw one special beautiful star.”

Our reading from Colossians talked about clothing ourselves with “compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,” and Apostle Onleilove’s sermon is titled “Kwanzaa Clothing: Principals to Live By”. We heard the children’s lesson where all of the people on the road to Bethlehem finally got where they were going, which is a very special occasion.

Maybe you wore some special clothes for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, or maybe you got some special new clothes for Christmas, or maybe you’d like to try to imagine what clothing made of kindness might look like.

This is a special kind of fashion drawing assignment. As you listen to the readings and the sermon, draw a picture of yourself or someone else wearing the wonderful clothing that you imagine.

The Garden of Eden is the setting for our story this week in which God is walking about. God’s question to us is, “Where are you?” In this story the humans are hiding in fear of God.

Imagine God walking about looking for you, calling to you, calling you by name. Draw where you are right now. And as you do, remember that God created you out of love, that God seeks you out of love. God loves what he has created and you can never lose that love.

In our scripture lesson today, Jesus blesses his followers before he departs from them.

What is it to bless someone?

A blessing consists of asking for God’s protection to surround another. Think of blessing someone or something then draw a picture of that blessing and, if you could, write the words you would say. “

In our lesson today we hear Jesus talking about love. And, this is Mother’s Day when we honor those who mothered us. Mothering is very much like loving.

Imagine a story where someone is mothering. What does mothering look like to you? It could be a woman or a man doing the mothering — loving, caring for, nurturing, comforting, supporting, holding, helping to grow. Let us also worship the God who mothers us.

This week’s prompt is inspired by the story of the Disciples gathered in a locked room, terrified for their safety and terrified upon seeing Jesus, who was dead and now is here with them. The women at the empty tomb were also frightened of the angel who told them to “fear not”. I wonder what makes you frightened, or our animals. Please draw something to do with being afraid – you, the your pet, whatever.

4 Apr 2021 (Easter)

Consider drawing flowers, flowers budding, flowers blooming, that remind us of Easter. If we were in the sanctuary, it would be filled with flowers, I bet. You might remember what that is like and draw the flowers in church or in your garden or a field or beside the road or in a park or even a single flower struggling to grow through a crack in cement or in a hand passing a bouquet to someone loved.

Draw Easter flowers in any setting you like.
